Public installations allow artwork to move beyond the wall and into space. By combining materials, form, light, and movement, installations create immersive experiences that people can walk through, gather around, and engage with from multiple angles.
At Paint The Town Murals, we design and deliver custom public installations for precincts, developments, councils, events, and public spaces. Installations can be permanent or temporary, depending on the purpose of the site, the lifespan of the project, and the desired level of interaction.
Projects may include sculptural elements, laser-cut metal, 3D features, projection and light-based works, as well as installations using fabric, modular components, and recyclable materials. This flexibility allows artworks to respond to both long-term placemaking goals and short-term activations, festivals, or events.
Each installation is developed specifically for its site, considering scale, sightlines, materials, durability, and how people will interact with the work over time. Temporary installations can be designed to be easily installed, relocated, or removed, while permanent works are developed with longevity, safety, and maintenance in mind.
Public installations can be used to:
- Create landmarks and focal points within precincts
- Add depth and dimension to public spaces
- Activate sites through light, movement, or projection
- Support events, launches, and temporary activations
- Explore sustainable approaches using reusable or recyclable materials
We manage projects end to end, working closely with architects, designers, engineers, fabricators, and stakeholders to ensure installations meet safety, structural, and compliance requirements. Where appropriate, we also collaborate with First Nations artists and community representatives to ensure cultural narratives are led and respected.
Public installations offer an opportunity to create memorable, multi-layered experiences that define a place — whether for a moment or for the long term. Our approach balances creativity with practical delivery, resulting in artworks that are engaging, considered, and well integrated into the public realm.
